Julie Taymor wowed Broadway with her musical version of Disney's The Lion King, and this epic retelling of Shakespeare's gory tragedy, based on another stage production, has a similar knockout impact. A shame the same attention lavished on the visual elements wasn't afforded to the performances, which range from the gruff (Anthony Hopkins's wronged Roman general, Titus) and the camp (Alan Cumming's Hitler-esque emperor, Saturninus) to the downright bizarre (Jessica Lange's Amazonian warrior queen, Tamora). After the first 30 minutes I contemplated abandoning this movie but decided to stick with it only because there was nothing better on TV. I'm glad I did because by the end I thought it was a very intriguing and thought-provoking movie especially as I knew nothing about this Shakespearean story at all. This guy wrote more violently than Peckinpah or John Woo! Good performances all round (although Alan Cummings is a bit over the top!) and an interesting mix of ancient and modern sets and costumes. Give it a go but beware it gets very gory!
I will add my approval to the chorus. I saw this film when it was in the cinema and also bought it on DVD when it came out. It's a fanstastic piece of film making, the scenes are well put together and the cast work together extremely well (there are no weak performances here). The film genuinely shocks in certain places but not just for the sake of it. By the end of the film you are completely sucked in to the story and the plight of the characters and are sitting there waiting for it all to come to a head.
I'm not a fan of Shakespeare at all so that isn't at all a pre-requisite of enjoying this film. Even though it's (largely) in the original text it's easy to follow and very funny too in an ultra-black way. Seriously recommend.
Bill Murray, star of Lost In Translation, The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, returns to our screens today with his latest film. Broken Flowers, directed by Jim Jarmusch, tells the story of Don Johnston (Murray) who receives a letter claiming he has a son who might be looking for him. He proceeds to trawl the country meeting up with former girlfriends to try and work out who might be the mother that caused the anonymous tip-off. The film also features Jeffrey Wright,... Read more
