This movie works very well in two ways. Firstly, it's a great as a period piece from the 1960's, to study social arrangements from that time.
Secondly, it really works as a drama.
There's an element of cliche about the characters, which can be a little off putting at the beginning of the film. But the characterisation does develop well, because of the quality of the script. What makes this a much more than average film is the performance of Sydney Poitier. It's quite simply stunning. Rent this and enjoy a masterful performance. It's a film where the leading man, cast and writers were all in the right place at the right time to create a bit of movie magic.
