The penultimate Hammer film to date is a muddled mixture of post-Exorcist shock and the more traditional House of Horror style. Based on Dennis Wheatley's occult bestseller (he hated it), the plot has satanist Christopher Lee coercing nubile nun Nastassja Kinski into having the Devil's offspring, while Richard Widmark, a writer specialising in the supernatural, tries to foil his plan. Although skilfully directed by Peter Sykes — with a firm tendency towards a trendy fragmented narrative and explicit exploitation — this misguided attempt to update Hammer's image is more likely to be remembered for teen Kinski's unashamed early performance than anything else.
Confusingly told, high camp diabolic thriller.
i cannot understand the other reviewer.the disc played no bother.perhaps it was their dvd player? i think the service is brilliant and better than all of the so-called competition put together.film was brill!.good solid performance from christopher lee and richard widmark.recommended.
The book by Dennis Wheatley is excellant. The film is passable. Richard Widmark tries. Natasha Kinski looks great, but it fails to capture like the book. Shame really.
See it if you haven't read the book as it stands by itself as a moderate horror film, but if your a wheatley fan don't bother, it is nowhere as good as the Devil Rides out even with its dodge sfx.
