Tokyo Drifter

Maverick Japanese director Seijun Suzuki turns the traditional yakuza gangster film on its ear with this stylish, intentionally oblique tale of a gangster whose maddening dependence on long-obsolete honor codes spurs rivals and even his own bosses to hunt him down.
To experience a film by this B-movie visionary is to experience Japanese cinema in all its frenzied, voluptuous excess. In 1966, Suzuki's studio ordered him to tow the line with what was intended to be a routine potboiler about a recently retired yakuza. The result was this thrilling fantasia in which the hero, Tetsu (Tetsuya Watari), tries to go straight, but is thwarted every step of the way.

Coming between Elegy to Violence and Branded to Kill, this deliriously contrived Yakuza flick earned director Seijun Suzuki a cult following outside a less receptive Japan. Combining elements from hard-boiled pulp, the spaghetti western and the Hollywood musical, this cartoon-like parody of the platitudes and attitudes of the gangster movie also makes spectacular use of colour, stylised decor and an ambiguous narrative. At the centre of the often surreal mayhem is Tetsuya Watari, whose ambition to quit the rackets is frustrated by his inability to shake either his dark past or the dogged attentions of hitman Hideaki Nitani.

An enjoyably delirious thriller in which virtually anything goes, including a parody of a bar brawl straight out of a John Wayne Western. It has an exotic appeal, together with a flamboyant visual style.

A Must For Any Serious Fan Of Cinema

Wildly stylistic 60s Japanese gangster film that wows you pretty much from start to finish. Mixing so many moods and styles it felt like it was a Japanese film shot in London, before it moves to Hollywood, suddenly it's a musical then a western and wow, it works so well. If you like Tarantino's films you'll get a lot from this. Loved it.
