Thoroughly modern in its story, its characters, its urban Tokyo setting, its absurdly funny action sequences, and its understated and ironic self-mockery, TOKYO GODFATHERS is an anime gem from director Satoshi Kon (MILLENNIUM ACTRESS). It is a snowy Christmas in Tokyo and three homeless people--Hana, Gin, and Miyuki--who drift .. Read more

    Beautiful, just beautiful

I won't say I had low expectations of this but having seen a lot of anime (japanese animation) I know that sometimes it can be ponderous, preachy or sometimes surreal. That's not the case with Tokyo Godfathers.

As with most anime the animation is both well done and well drawn but it's the storytelling and characters that makes this film stand out. Each characters is well drawn and you learn their backstories at just the right pace to keep you intrigued. There are plot twists and surprises galore but they never seem contrived. The laughs come thick and fast and are well timed usually stopping poignant scenes from becoming too cloying.

Even if you've neve seen an anime before, see this one. You're guaranteed to be smiling by the end of it.

    Refreshingly different

Tokyo Godfathers is a refreshingly different animated film, with the usual fantasy subjects being discarded in favour of a more realistic tale of 3 homeless misfits attempts to track down the mother of an abandoned baby they discover. The plot is very heavy on co-incidence, with all the main characters unexpectedly running into family members from their old lives, but given the Christmas fable feel this is not so annoying. The film does drag a little in the middle, as the quest for the mother goes on and on, but stick till the end and you'll be rewarded with a great twist ending and a finale that combines high drama with comedy antics and a great action chase scene. Refreshinlgy adult.

Wacky Japanese animation, full of humour and pathos

It's a strange, surreal story of down and outs in Tokyo, who find an abandoned baby and eventually decide to do the right thing... Crazy, zany, but ultimately entertaining and fun. Not dubbed, it's probably more fun that way too.

    Proven wrong...

I really enjoyed this film after my girlfriend asked that I rent it for the two of us to watch together, I wasn't too sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised.

I've watched a lot of other anime which seems to concentrate on action rather than intelligable story-lines, but this was different.

The animation in it is superb and lets you get a real liking for the main characters, whom at first seemed like one-dimensional stereotypes but opened up to prove me wrong. I'm very keen on the anime format, I've seen some very good films come out of it, but few that I'd be willing to watch again - this one is one of the exceptions.

    funny and moving story

My partner and I really enjoyed this film, the animation is of high quality and the story is great. The film concerns an abandoned baby and a lovable bunch of losers. It tugs at the heart strings without being too sentimental, exactly what the japanese do best. Its such a perfect christmas movie, it deserves to be a yuletide classic, get past the fact its animation and rent this movie!!!!!

    So much fun

One of the best anime films I've seen. Too many people believe anime to soley be science fiction related and don't see films like this and Perfect Blue. From start to finish this is touching, and funny. The characters have a great depth that pulls you into the movie and makes it affecting. Hana constantly had me in stitches of laughter. A must see!

    Fantastic

It is just a fantastic movie, really good story with interesting characters. Plot unfolds nicely with a few twists.

Cant believe someone did not watch it just because it was not in english.

    This really deserves five stars.
