Toolbox Murders

Tobe Hooper (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE) delivers a screamer that exhibits, to its credit, a solidly 1970s slasher feel. Set entirely in LA's historic Ambassador Hotel--which housed the very first Academy Awards--it blends the claustrophobic feel of Polanski's THE TENANT with the sleazy aura of that era. Nell (Angela Bettis, GIRL, INTERRUPTED) and her husband Steven (Brent Roam) have recently moved to the city, taking up residence in the faded glory of the now-dilapidated Lusman Arms apartment building, managed by the slimy Byron McLieb (Greg Travis, STARSHIP TROOPERS). Almost immediately Nell realises that something is amiss, hearing strange noises at night, and discovering unsettling signs of witchcraft. When two tenants disappear, Nell is determined to investigate, despite her husband's insistence that she is just being paranoid. The trail she uncovers leads increasingly and disturbingly back to the foundations of the building's very architecture. Atmospheric and moody, the actors' solid performances and Hooper's deft directorial touch make this a thrilling, unforgettable journey into the terrifying realm of the occult.

    Slow Beggining, Excellent Ending!!

The first hour of this film was a bit slow, with only a few murders, but when the girl finds out there Is someone living In half the the the appartment building other occupants can't access, things really start to hot up. I would have said after watching an hour of this film, don't bother, but once I'd seen the whole movie It would be a thumbs up from me!!

    Not too bad

A modest return to form, after years and years of utterly unwatchable films, from the man who made the original (and still the best) 'The Texas chain saw massacre'. The idea of an occult building, hiding a nutter who preys on the losers and dreamers who come to Hollywood every day is okay, and writers and director have clearly enjoyed themselves hinting at the 'Babylon' side of Hollywood history, with Hooper making a fair fist of creating a properly creepy, lowering atmosphere within the apartment block.

On the other hand, he can't resist running through every cliche in the book (the ending is particularly annoying), which eventually means that too much becomes frustrating. And the budget is clearly so low, you might end up giggling at the way almost every shot has been cropped or straitened. Good stuff here, then, but continually compromised - although gore fans might especially enjoy the sporadic murders.
