Dustin Hoffman's greatest performance
By Lionel Laurent from London , 06 Aug 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
'Tootsie', funnily enough, is a film with balls. The idea of an out-of-work actor becoming a woman in order to revive his career may seem completely cliched nowadays, but Dustin Hoffman is electrifying to watch. When a man, he perfectly encapsulates frustration and determination; when Tootsie, he transforms these traits into a positive force for gender relations.
I would say, however, that the film's greatest strength is its greatest flaw. The comedy works well at the start, but by the half-way point it begins to drag, wading knee-deep into a contrived romantic sub-plot. Its heart is in the right place, and the script is far superior to crass farce such as 'Mrs Doubtfire', but the vivacity of Hoffman's performance highlights the need for a tighter pacing.
Thankfully the finale is a brilliantly executed surprise, and avoids the preachiness of subsequent films of this ilk. It may not be entirely realistic, or have the sympathetic characters that such a comedy would require nowadays, but 'Tootsie' is an eminently watchable and funny satire. It's just a shame that the film can't extend the dynamism it gives to its eponymous hero (ine?) to the piece as a whole.- Was this review helpful to you?

(39)Entertaining comedy farce
By Bassman71 (617 reviews) from Didsbury, England , 06 Jun 2012Male unemployed actor, has bad reputation, goes in drag for part, gets it, becomes soap opera sensation, complications.
Entertaining comedy farce with a very recognisable cast with Dustin Hoffman, Teri Garr, Jessica Lange and the deadpan Bill Murray all being excellent.
It is dated (the music is shocking), predictable and a little silly at points as farce can be but a good script and solid acting help it along.- Was this review helpful to you?

ladies man
By daisymaisy (51 reviews) from Tonbridge , 28 Aug 2011This comedy is clever in the fact that, not only is it very funny, but it is thought provoking too. Dustin Hoffman does a superb job of playing the typical guy, when it comes to how they see and treat women. However, as Dorothy, he starts to see how badly his sex can treat women when they lie and cheat on them and are condescending in their manner towards them As he confesses to 'Julie' at the end: I was a better man with you as a woman than I was as a man. The experience of being Dorothy, therefor, allowed him to ultimately become a better man, because he had seen and experienced things from both sides. That's why the women loved him, because they felt he could really relate to them and give women a voice - even if they did believe Dorothy was for real!- Was this review helpful to you?

An acting masterpiece!
By JuiceOfLife (27 reviews) , 28 Jun 2011If there is one thing i do not find remotely funny is men dressing as women in real life or in movies, even in a comedy context.
But this is different. Why? Maybe because Dustin is so talented that he really manages to 'be' a woman, not a man acting a woman. So no stupid camp voice or camp gestures here, 'simply' a woman and my word, he is also a very pretty one at that! There is no way by voice or from his face/body/posture you could say this is a male actor.
If most women behaved (and dressed with as much care and respect for themselves) like him/her, maybe just maybe there would be more respect for the feminine. Just like Tootsie, sorry, 'Dorothy', you first must have respect for yourself.
And we always keep on about men who should get in touch with their feminine side well i think that, if Dorothy is so strong it is because she is in touch with her masculine side, she has balls!- Was this review helpful to you?
