Quentin Tarantino's vigorous assertion in Sleep with Me that this is the ultimate gay fantasy movie rather pulls the carpet from under the feet of those attempting to appraise this slavish tribute to flash fly boys and their hi-tech toys. There is no denying the quality and entertainment value of the flying sequences, which effortlessly blend mile-high footage with state-of-the-art modelwork, but the rivalry between Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, and Cruise's tempestuous affair with Kelly McGillis, are pure bunk. Yet, with the shameful exception of McGillis, all emerged with reputations enhanced, particularly director Tony Scott, who takes all the credit for preventing this mindless macho daydream from nose-diving.

    Top Gun...Top Film

I can't believe i am the first person to be singing the praises of this film...it is an absolute classic and i can see no circumstances where it should be passed over.

A simple piece of advice...watch it, watch it now and you'll be quoting lines and siging up to be a fighter pilot before you know it.

There really is something for everyone, convince the missus it's a love story then sit back and enjoy the fighter pilot action.

    Simply genius.

    It's still got it......

Everyone my age (28) can remember Top Gun when it came out - women wanted to be with Tom Cruise, and men wanted to be him (even down to those awful leather jackets with dodgy airforce logos).

Top Gun was a film that defined an era, it appealed to men (motorbikes, planes, guns, competition and killing bad guys) women (Tom Cruise, men in showers, romance) and children (Neeeoooowwww, bang bang bang!)

The question is, does it still deserve a watch? Absolutely! I rented this the other night and I defy you not to spot/feel the following:

    1. You will sing Dangerzone / Take my breath away in your head for days afterwards.

    2. You will laugh when you see the doctor from ER with hair and a moustache.

    3. You will HAVE to turn your surround sound up to get the full 'whoosh' of the planes.

4.You will get a tear in your eye when Goose dies.

5.The women in the house will make some comment about how good looking Tom is, especially with his top off.

6.The men will question why in the romantic scene there are bright lights behind the windows, and Tom's teeth look wierd (It's a jealousy thing girls!)

7.Everyone will comment on how good the film is when it's finished!

Does his story have some socially responsible message? Err No. This is an out and out, leave your brain at the door action movie, with plenty to entertain the whole family! Rent it now!

    Ultrapassed

This movie was good, maybe, when our minds were so innocent as to accept such heroism, like the other old famous movies of this while are tired, this kind of action is like Stallone or Arnie.

    Homoerotic masterpiece

Well hello flyboy! This gay classic has it all: towel-clad locker room scenes, beach volley ball, tight uniforms, more locker room scenes, well-oiled muscular pretty boys preening and pouting, tragic love, karaoke, Val Kilmer, Tom Cruise. As a previous reviewer has already said, it makes you want to join the Airforce. Rent this, dim the lights, lock the door, have a box of tissues ready and have yourself a good time boy!!

    Enter the danger zone

Had to watch this with the future wife, her choice not mine.

Turn the lights off. Put your surround to full. Switch brain to awe. Ah the 80s excesses, right wing politics, cold war paranoia, jingoistic flag waving (think 40s and 50s type patriotic flying movies).

Still a watchable movie today with some of the best flight sequences

    you will ever see.

One of the ALL TIME BEST Films

Cracking movie. Watched it until my VHS version wore out. Got it on DVD, now waiting for the SE to come out.

    Superb acting from EVERY actor/ress.

It contains comedy, romance, hi-octane action, hunky men(if you like that sort of thing), sexy women, awfully fun karaoke, tragedy, more action and most importantly the director brings ALL of this together beautifully. Can't think of any better film.

    Badly Listed

I really did think this was the movie plus bonus features. Having not seen the movie before, this disc was rubbish and I sent it straight back.
