If there was ever a film to challenge the auteur theory that movies are primarily the work and therefore to the credit of the director then this is it. The driving force behind this splendid gay romantic comedy drama is Harvey Fierstein, who repeats his Tony award-winning stage performance in this screen version of his own hit play. Although it occasionally lapses into soppiness, the script is a finely judged mix of sass and schmaltz. Gravel-voiced, camp and desperately vulnerable, Fierstein is tremendous, while Anne Bancroft does the best of her string of Jewish mama routines. The surprise is Matthew Broderick (back in cinemas from today with Jim Carrey in the intermittently hilarious The Cable Guy), who is perfect, playing against type, as Harvey's lover.
A truncated version of a successful Broadway show, the film loses the theatricality of the original and transforms the material into a dated melodrama.
Great one liners aside this film is superb. It's based on the stage play of the same name & stars Harvey Feinstein (who also wrote it). Loosley based on his early life in New York's drag circuit it never veers towards sentimentality too much. Indeed the script is sharp, witty, warm and in many ways hilarious. Top notch acting is provided by a sublime cast headed by Anne Bancroft as Harvey's all controlling Jewish 'Momma'. Sheer class.
what can you say. A gay classic that started off as a stage play and became an award winner. To dvd for the first time. Can a drag queen find love with a bi sexual guy? love can be found in all sorts of places. Arnold is a strong character who fights to be accepted, loved and be true to himself. Many classic lines have been quoted from this film, especially when dealing with your family who will not accept your gay sexuality.
