Noble intentions, poor outcome

I feel bad for saying this as 'Tortoise in Love' was a community project, but for me it didn't tick the boxes. The direction was poor and so was the script. I did laugh a few times, and I'm not totally immune to the charms of something so low budget, but ultimately the good stuff was outweighed by the bad.
Worth watching if you have time on your hands, you want to see something a bit different or if you love English cinema to the point where you need to be able compare the best with the worst (and have some credibility with your film-buff pals).- Was this review helpful to you?

(3)Not a good British film
By a customer , 10 May 2013It was with some anticipation that we started to watch this low budget romantic comedy. As locals to the featured village we expected to feel some sense of pride especially as the reviews on the box compared it to 'Calander Girls' and 'The Full Monty'. Sadly it wasn't a patch on them. We thought the script weak, the acting wooden and found ourselves cringing rather than smiling at the 'funnies'. We kept going but towards the end decided to try the 'making of the film' instead as that was billed as even better than the movie. Mmmm, I'm not so sure. Sorry Kingston Bagpuise, it must have been fun to make but it was less fun to watch.- Was this review helpful to you?

A bit like Tamara Drewe - but this is funny
By TheOriginalGroundhog (3 reviews) , 16 Oct 2012Sometimes you feel frustrated by films which are based upon an amusing concept, but then fail to deliver - and what should be funny turns out not to be (see the above example). Not so with this offering.
This is a whimsical look at village life which hits the right note most of the time. It is fairly gently paced (as you should be able to discern from the title) but never stagnates. And the cast of supporting characters are well written and many of these performances are simply delightful. Possibly in an oblique compliment to Four Weddings, the tale largely unfolds in the weeks and months surrounding progressive village fairs (which are beautifully filmed).
This film is not a reservoir of side splitting gags, but if you like the idea of chuckling gently for an hour and a half, it will do just nicely. Recommend it to your friends.- Was this review helpful to you?
