A good film, only flawed by the originalBy TheWatchman (755 reviews) from Suburbia , 25 Jan 2013
[Highly rated reviewer]Imagine a world where 1990 didnt happen. Then, some 22 years later, a sci-fi action film comes out where Colin Farrell plays a lowly construction worker who wakes up one morning to find out that he might be a spy and everyone is trying to kill him. Everyone would love it and hail it as a great film. However, 1990 DID happen and, during that year, Arnold Schwarzenegger released Total Recall a much loved sci-fi romp where he does all that and more. Therefore, many people (including me) said, Why are they bothering to remake it? To be fair, Colin Farrells version isnt bad: it has great sets, great special effects, awesome chases and some nice ideas (more based on the original source material short story by Phillip K Dick than Arnies version was). However, its major drawback is a sense that weve seen it all before. Every now and again, youll find a scene which is nearly word for word identical to the 1990 version and it keeps reminding you that youve actually seen this story before. I found this quite jarring. It gets the action and tension right and plays the whole things straight quite a major change from Arnies one-liners and pulpy comic book feel to the original. If you havent seen the original and you like sci-fi, then youre definitely missing out. I think for those who might not have seen it yet, theyll appreciate Colin Farrells version more. But this is a project that was always semi-doomed from the start. Schwarzeneggers version was always going to be too popular to completely match. Fair play for them for doing their best to go in a different direction, but I think this is one film that would actually benefit from NOT being called Total Recall. Its a good film and it certainly doesnt deserve the typical scorn that most remakes automatically receive. However, I still think it comes back to the question, Why did they bother?

What a way to get to work!!By LING0 (82 reviews) from Conwy , 16 Aug 2013
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideFor a movie that has gotten mixed reviews after watching it you will either like it or hate it. I liked it, it was a nice fresh take on Philip K Dick's short story and was quite well removed from Arnie's movie. It was fast paced and engrossing, but I liked the design and the CGI cityscapes which were very reminiscent of Blade Runner. Good movie.
Not goodBy TomLS (11 reviews) , 11 Aug 2013Acting wasn't always great, the plot was weak. Visual effects were good though. I honestly don't know why I bothered watching this !
Proof that some remakes WORK!By a customer , 07 Aug 2013Far superior to the original. Better cast, acting, the tension was bang on and it felt a little more 'real' than Arnies film Much much better!!!!!
Entertaining Watch!By Squids (8 reviews) , 04 Aug 2013Loved it. Fast moving and very entertaining. Great choice of lead actors/actresses. Fan of the original, but also enjoyed this story-line. Kate Beckinsale could beat, and chase me around the planet anytime she wanted to!
Its good, but its not right.By Craggy_head (2 reviews) , 02 Aug 2013The original version of this movie is a much more enjoyable film to watch. Had they renamed it something other than Total Recall, It could have been passed off as a completely original movie and would have benefitted from it. Alas they did not. If you have never seen Arnie's version, then you will most likely enjoy this movie, It has a lot to recommend it: Good performances, great special effects and sets and a half decent script. But if you have seen The original, then you will be disappointed by this remake. The bits in the original that you loved, i. e. the three boobed mutant prossie (or is that just me?) are absent from the remake. They would have been better releasing a directors cut of the original and tweaking the special effects. In conclusion: Remake is Ok if you haven't seen the original.
