Silly, violent action movie presumably aimed at a teen audience that likes plenty of blood and gore.
TOY SOLDIERS is the explosive story of a taskforce more dedicated to mayhem than maths! When a group of terrorists attack a private boarding school, a bunch of friends named the rejects, bring it upon themselves to protect the school and the people being held hostage inside it. They daringly set up a plan to get information to the outside world, and the many police officers surrounding the school. The young lads quick/smart thinking puts them one step ahead of the terrorists. Most of the featured charactors have important American parents making it a very more exciting storyline. This is a must see for everybody.
I loved this film as a kid and was scared that now I'm on the wrong side of my twenties, I may see it as a bad film that fulfilled my teen fantasies of playing army. However - very pleasantly surprised. In a world where CGI is used all the time, it is refreshing to see an old school action movie using physical effects - such as real helicopters and real explosions on cars. The plot is a rip of Diehard with a bunch of misfit prep school kids taking on the terrorists that have invaded there school.
That said the cast is pretty solid with older leads adding credibility next to the younger ones, and the kids in question are quite well drawn characters. The plot is cheesy and the action is A-team style stuff, but with an accomplished script writer in David Koepp - the film rises above what trash it may have been and is actually in some scenes very polished in both direction and pace.
This was also an era when studio's were not trying to push for a PG13 movie to sell more seats, so you do get a little violence and some choice language along the way that modern films aiming at this audience lack.
All in all a very enjoyable little action film. I might add that the fashion sense of early 90's teenagers is questionable, and that dates the film quite badly.
