Spence & Kate

Spencer Tracy & Katherine Hepburn are in sparkling form as husband & wife lawyers on opposite sides in an attempted murder trial. The supporting cast all went on to make their marks in films. The marvellous Judy Holliday (Bells Are Ringing & Born Yesterday) as the wronged wife, Tom Ewell (The 7 Year Itch) as the philandering husband, David Wayne (How to Marry a Millionaire) as the lecherous neighbour intent on enticing Katherine Hepburn, Jean Hagen (Lena Lamont in Singin' in the Rain) as the other woman. With a script by Ruth Gordon & Garson Kanin, just about the best in the business (nominated for an Oscar) and directed by George Cukor it still stands up after almost 60 years.- Was this review helpful to you?

(9)Has the same magic as watching a good live play
By Martymonster (14 reviews) from London , 06 Apr 2010This was my first Tracy & Hepburn. All the hype I have heard about their chemistry is true.
What makes this movie stand out amongst most romantic comedys is that it is about a couple that are already married and are already deeply in love. AND it also has themes and ideas that make you think.
Scenes in the couple's house often have long takes and have an intimate feeling like watching them verbally spar on stage.
Brilliant.- Was this review helpful to you?

Lustrous, topical and entertaining!
By davidbabsky (5 reviews) from Richmond , 05 Apr 2009Tracy and Hepburn, as husband and wife, take opposite sides as lawyers in a legal battle.
Judy Holliday - in a brilliantly sad but comedic performance - is the downtrodden wife deserted by smalltime lothario Tom Ewell (represented in court by Tracy) and Hepburn defends Holliday who's accused of attempting to murder Ewell.
Extended scenes of domestic bliss at home with Adam and Amanda Bonner (Tracy and Hepburn) seem there just for the fun of watching them spark off each other. Overall, it's a comedy (!) about a woman's mistreatment by her spouse, and how badly husbands (personified by Ewell) treat wives (Holliday). A comedy with a pertinent message.- Was this review helpful to you?

Timeless classic
By zippychick (7 reviews) from Richmond , 27 Apr 2008Sassy, witty, a real treat. A battle of the sexes batween a married couple is enhanced by the off screen love affair between Tracy and Hepburn.- Was this review helpful to you?
