  • Very average---gloomy realism of post-war Britain.

    [Highly rated reviewer]

It's Ealing at its peak, it's got a string of British acting stalwarts and it's got an interesting compendium of inter-linked story lines. It should be well above average. But somehow, for me, it just doesn't work. I think it's something to do with the way it uses that post-war 'realism' and the lives of everyday , boring people-----when I prefer the escapism that cinema's Golden Age brought into people's mundane lives. Especially during the austerity just after the War, this film must have been quite depressing when first released : at that time, I think folk here wanted glorious Technicolour, glamorous Hollywood escapism or, if wanting home-grown material, a good laugh ( which ealing was so good at providing). This film has a hint of the awful world of 'soaps' which now swamp us and which have done so much to demean the medium of TV and also to a lesser extent films. I can see steam railway 'anoraks' getting something from the film, but it didn't do much for me. Sorry, Ealing...............

A chance to look back at what were dramatic concerns back then and find that they are not dissimilar to now.

Boyfriends suspicious of girlfriends reuniting with old male friends, illegal immigrant trying to escape the authorities, a celebrated musician playing the field and and an accidental criminal running away.

The biggest difference is the language of the times otherwise stories remain the same through the years.

A pleasant enough watch even if the train casualties could have been predicted.

A good period piece from 40s Britain, giving glimpses of everyday life. The film does well to intertwine several tales, all ending up on a specific train journey - but the end of the film comes crashing in when you really wanted to know: What Happened Next?

Jack Warner plays his usual trustworthy role as the train driver in an unfortunate crash at the beginning of the film. We go back three days to find out the stories of various passengers before returning to the scene and finding out who lived and who died...

Portmanteau films were popular in the late forties and early fifties and this one isn't bad of its kind. Whilst the story of the conductor and his love affair was typical British tosh and the romance tale of the German on the run weren't particularly engaging, the tale of the actor and his sluttish wife and the train driver and his family were engaging enough. Three directors handled the four stories and like many other films shot with multiple directors your mileage does vary.

There's some excellent model work during the crash and its fascinating to look back at an era where there was a 'British Rail' and employees had a job for life. Nice to see Michael Hordern in an early role as a pipe smoking detective and a barely recognisable Leslie Philips as a drivers mate as well as a young Peter Finch as a Shakespearean actor.

Also interesting to see how Liverpool was seen as the gateway to the western World long before catching a plane became the norm. Well worth a watch!
