Antoine Fuqua (THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS, BAIT) turns up the intensity level with TRAINING DAY, a charged drama about police corruption in downtown Los Angeles. Ethan Hawke stars as Jake Hoyt, a well-intentioned young officer who thinks he's found his ticket to becoming a detective in the form of undercover officer Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington). Harris is a notorious figure in the streets and in the office. He also has the authority to make Jake's professional wishes come true, provided Jake is able to prove his worth on Alonzo's team. At first, Alonzo's blunt, carefree demeanour provides a shock to Jake's optimistic system, but as it becomes clear that Alonzo is dangerously out of control, Jake must decide whether or not to risk his future in the name of the law.
Washington's performance as the hardened, pragmatic detective is a sight to behold. He delivers his lines with a devilish ferocity that keeps the film bubbling throughout. Hawke slips into the role of the rookie everyman with ease, providing a good contrast to Washington's fiery presence. Former video director Fuqua completes the picture by casting musicians Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and Macy Gray in supporting roles.

Arguably the edgiest and most pessimistic release from a major Hollywood studio since Fight Club, this is a powerful anti-buddy movie set on the mean streets of LA. Looking to join an elite narcotics squad, rookie cop Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) is teamed with the unit's swaggering, streetwise commander Sergeant Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington) for an educational 24 hours during which he will be expected to prove his mettle. But Harris is a seasoned veteran who doesn't play by anything even resembling the rules and, as it soon transpires, doesn't just enforce the law but considers himself above it. Directed with style and snap by Antoine Fuqua (whose empty-headed Replacement Killers did not suggest such storytelling assurance) and anchored by highly credible characterisations from its two stars, this striking thriller paints a dark-hued portrait of LA law enforcement. Although it's disappointing that the script finally succumbs to a clutch of cop clichés, this doesn't blunt the effect of persuasive work from all concerned.
Tense, violent, urban thriller notable for the opportunity it provides for Washington to strut his stuff as a harsh, charismatic, psychopathic cop.
Superior buddy cop thriller that I was suprised to learn didn't get nominated for Best Picture in 2001. A cop spends his first day in the narcotics division with his boss and the film goes off on an absurb but enthralling tangent as the cop gets some exposure to basic 'street' activities. Great acting performances, good direction and a great script combined to give an authentic feel to the environment and believability in the characters on screen. At times the film ploughs through moral areas that have been done before but there was just something about the film and characters that sucked me in and although it does cliche off a bit at the end, I thought this was the best cop thriller that I've seen since LA Confidential.
Excellent film, full of excitement and action . Held my firm attention to the end.
Actor Ethan Hawke has praised Madonna for standing up for Romania's gypsy community - insisting the singer "transcended" her pop star status by speaking out about their plight. The Training Day star campaigns as part of his mother Leslie's charity Ovidiu Rom to ensure children from the country receive proper educations. And during a trip to promote the good cause, Hawke thanked Madonna for risking a backlash from her fans by urging people to fight discrimination against gypsies in Europe. He... Read more
