Most helpful review
nothing to do with Hornby
By a customer from Fife , 20 Sep 2003[Highly rated reviewer]
This movie takes an odd look at life, more specifically, an odd look at heroin. The dirty, desperate, colourless depiction of addicts is clear and present but the all around feel is more surreal-like you are invited to see the world as heroin users do.
For all its seriousness, there are several hilarious comedy spots. so when Trainspotting brings you down, it picks you back up again...
There are strong performances all around by Mcgregor and Carlyle as well as a longer role for Kevin Mckidd who exchanges his clean lifestyle for a shot in the arm eventually.
The strength of Trainspotting is in the script - excellent dialogue and mixture of the ironic and the serious.
You can choose life, I?ll choose Trainspotting. 9 out of 10- Was this review helpful to you?

Just stick with it - this tells a good story
By a customer , 20 Dec 2012From an unpromising start - much as I love Edinburgh can I really sit through the scenes of squalor and the endless bad language? - but the humour, the human interest of the story, the film's ability to depict the horrors of drugtaking, yet make it so clear that those involved are funny, interesting, 'normal' people - all of these gripped my attention. It was never a dull film, often very funny, great dialogue, brilliant acting from characters as large as life, lots to think about, and a wonderful ending!- Was this review helpful to you?

interesting movie but so depressing
By denis007 (131 reviews) , 28 Sep 2012This movie can be best described by these words: drug usage, profane language, squalor, distress of people, fights, death,... I enjoyed much more the movie 'The beach' by the same director. Trainspotting was a bit too depressing to my taste. Hopefully, it lasted only 1 hour and a half. I saw it because of all the brouhaha made around it. Robert Carlysle is an interesting actor and performed very well in this movie. Same for Ewan McGregor. Nonetheless, I have no wish to watch it ever again. Once is more than enough. Not to repeat myself, it was a bit too depressing for me! The reason I gave a 3 1/2 star is that it is very contemporary and very realistic in Boyle's approach to the misery of drug users, especially when he focusses his attention to the mother and her dead baby. A very shocking and disturbing scene, which was soundly incorporated in the movie. Also, I found interesting Ewan McGregor's vision of the baby creeping onto the ceiling. Really creepy!- Was this review helpful to you?
