Treasure Planet

In this adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's TREASURE ISLAND, Disney presents a fantastic space adventure. Jim Hawkins (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a teenage boy with a taste for adventure who seems to always be in trouble, much to the chagrin of his hardworking mother (Laurie Metcalf). But when he comes into possession of a high-tech map leading to Treasure Planet where an ancient cache of jewels and gold lies buried, it's like a dream come true. His mother's friend Doctor Doppler (David Hyde Pierce) arranges for a ship, and the two set sail, traversing the universe on course for the treasure. Captain Amelia (Emma Thompson), a domineering feline, is in charge of a rough-and-tumble crew of odd creatures, who may have their own designs on the treasure. Jim is placed under the supervision of John Silver (Brian Murray), the cook, who is both his father figure and his adversary. Slowly but surely the ship makes its way toward its destination, as Jim comes of age, learning to follow his heart, do what's right, and be a leader.
With stunning computer animation that combines both space and sea elements, TREASURE PLANET called upon the skills of 350 artists, animators, and technicians. The result is dazzling, colorful, and fast-moving, with some very realistic-looking creatures including variations on spiders, robots, and whales.

Disney continued its literary plundering with this animated take on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel Treasure Island. Slickly revamped for today's more sophisticated youngsters, the swashbuckling pirate adventure now unfolds in space. This allows creative imaginations to run wild, as teen tearaway Jim Hawkins joins the crew of a space galleon to cross the universe in search of a fabled treasure trove. Such artistic abandon does result in some stunning intergalactic landscapes, but it also leads to a hotch-potch of flat alien characters. Aside from pony-tailed human Jim (voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and the cyborg cook John Silver, all are underdeveloped. It doesn't help that, other than an impressive spaceboarding sequence, there are insufficient set pieces to really hold the attention. Considering directors John Musker and Ron Clements were the men behind Aladdin and The Little Mermaid, you would expect better.

This space age version of Stevenson's oft-filmed story still keeps a period look, with spaceships resembling galleons. But its visual flair does not compensate for its uninvolving script.

    Great Fun

Great fun. The usual high standard animation you expect from a Disney feature, although a little less self-parody than many recent efforts and not a musical either, both of which work in its favour. This is a clever genre swapping retell of a classic story that actually works really well. If like animation, give it a go.

Not bad at all. I was expecting to be fairly bad because of some of the reviews I had read but it actually turned out to be pretty good. I think they had one animation team per character or something because there were some wildy differing styles on the characters and the CG didn't always blend in seamlessy with the 2D stuff but I found the people engaging and the story fairly well balanced with some expressive motion on the characters.
