Trees Lounge

Steve Buscemi's directorial debut is an acclaimed, often-comic examination of an unemployed barfly auto mechanic (Buscemi) and his pathetic non-existence. After being fired from his job, this Long Island loser spends his days and nights in the titular watering hole (when he's not out driving an ice-cream truck), not realizing that talking about life isn't the same as living it. Buscemi's film features an all-star supporting cast that includes Seymour Cassel, Anthony LaPaglia, Debi Mazar, and Samuel Jackson.

Steve Buscemi once claimed he'd have been a bar bum had his acting career not taken off, and it's tempting to assume that several of the characters in this, his directorial debut, hail from the time when he was “resting”. This is indie film-making à la John Cassavetes rather than Quentin Tarantino, with the humour being understated, the drama credible, the dialogue having an everyday ring and the performances ideally suited to a world of regrets and whiskey chasers. If the camerawork is occasionally prone to showiness, the atmosphere of both the neighbourhood Buscemi prowls in his ice-cream van and the Trees Lounge itself is totally authentic.

A slice of bar-room life, as desultory and apparently aimless as the real thing, but also managing to suggest a few home truths along the way.

    No extras

Very good film, which I've seen before. Wanted to rent the DVD to see what extras were on it. Answer - NONE. AT ALL. And the film itself is not even in widescreen. Very poor effort.

    Classic Steve Buscemi

A very slow film but packed with dialogue of a broken man's life and all the problems that go with it. I can't think of a better actor to play the lead role other than Buscemi. If you like his films then you will love this too.
