Steve Buscemi's directorial debut is an acclaimed, often-comic examination of an unemployed barfly auto mechanic (Buscemi) and his pathetic non-existence. After being fired from his job, this Long Island loser spends his days and nights in the titular watering hole (when he's not out driving an ice-cream truck), not realizing .. Read more

Steve Buscemi once claimed he'd have been a bar bum had his acting career not taken off, and it's tempting to assume that several of the characters in this, his directorial debut, hail from the time when he was “resting”. This is indie film-making à la John Cassavetes rather than Quentin Tarantino, with the humour being understated, the drama credible, the dialogue having an everyday ring and the performances ideally suited to a world of regrets and whiskey chasers. If the camerawork is occasionally prone to showiness, the atmosphere of both the neighbourhood Buscemi prowls in his ice-cream van and the Trees Lounge itself is totally authentic.

A slice of bar-room life, as desultory and apparently aimless as the real thing, but also managing to suggest a few home truths along the way.

    No extras

Very good film, which I've seen before. Wanted to rent the DVD to see what extras were on it. Answer - NONE. AT ALL. And the film itself is not even in widescreen. Very poor effort.

    Sublimely sad.

For me, good films make you hurt or laugh inside; this does some of both, but more of the former than the latter, and i'd allow yourself a few minutes quiet contemplation after it's finished before standing up and rushing back to the real world. The understated, heart-wrenching final scene, especially Buscemi's face in the last few seconds, is worth the entrance fee in itself...

    Classic Steve Buscemi

A very slow film but packed with dialogue of a broken man's life and all the problems that go with it. I can't think of a better actor to play the lead role other than Buscemi. If you like his films then you will love this too.

Enjoyable low key slice of Americana suburbia with an excellent performance from Buscemi as the hapless Ice Cream seller

    Trees Lounge

I thought the film was nicely underrated-the acting, the story and the ratings. When films seem to be constantly trying to outdo each other, it was nice to see something a little more laid back.

    Melancholia in Suburbia

This semi-biographical tale centres around a down on his luck, yet charismatic bar fly, set on his way to self destruction.

Buscemi's second self directed/penned feature is slower paced than some might expect.

This in no way detracts from the overall brilliance and charm that trees lounge conveys.

Tommy's character, while on the surface, demands both pity and sympathy. It's in his anti-heroic attributes ie. selfishness and callousness, that make the film so human and believeable.

    Mellow and Depressing

Steve Buscemi might not be the best director out there, but he's a pretty good actor (at least he knows how to play those outcast-cum-loser types), and in "Tress Lounge" we're given another example of this. The film is a bit slow, and it feels stilted from time to time, but I liked the film because it gives Buscemi a chance to show off his acting skills. A nice little film it is, full of booze drinking, and mumbling dialogue.

    Not so Hot

I understand the premise and theme of this film, but didn't enjoy it very much, felt quite depressed after watching it.

    Trees Lounge

If you like watching films just because they happen to be there, put this on your list. No great dramas, just a story of everyday life revolving around the Trees Lounge. Steve Buscemi is superb as both director and actor, whose character comes to realise that being a part of life is rather better than talking about it over rather alot of Wild Turkey. The scene with his ex in the hospital awaiting the birth of (his) child - destined to be looked after by her new man - is genuinely moving. Plenty of atmosphere as well and alot of excellent characters make up a film about ordinary people with a range of hang-ups. Gives you the confidence to be an individual.
