  • Courtroom fun

'Trial and Error' is one of those movies that starts off as one thing and becomes another. As a courtroom comedy, it has shades of 'My Cousin Vinny' but as a romantic comedy, it is quite different to the usual.

Jeff Daniels and Michael Richards (Kramer in 'Seinfeld') are both good but the real revelation here is Charlize Theron, who may well be playing to type in this stage of her career in a decorative role but still showing the charisma that would serve her well in later movies.

Locations are good, the comedy setpieces are good and I'd happily spend 90 minutes regularly watching this kind of movie because it not only ticks all the boxes but the characters are funny and likeable in just the right measure.

I almost didn't watch this as I had been told it is really boring, I'm glad I did though as it is not boring just silly.

The story is nothing new, and if you watch a lot of American films you will have seen it dozens of times before, but the characters are funny and likeable. Charlize Theron is particularly nice in this film, so if you are a fan it is well worth viewing.

  • More error than trial

Rip Torn good in a supporting role. Michael Richards gets top billing over Bill Pullman, surprisingly. And Charlize Theron, pre Oscar, plays an endearing waitress.

Good comedy film. but a bit formulaic and with obvious ending.
