    The best tristam on dvd

Already own this on VHS. The dvd comes with enhanced sound which now capture the unique acoustics of the Festspielhaus Bayreuth fully.

    Tristan & Isolde

This made a pretty good introduction to this opera for me. This production was recorded in the 1980s so picture quality is ok if not brilliant, unf it is not in letterbox format which may be a problem if you have widescreen. The acting was v good and to my untutored ear the singing was of a similar standard. The female lead was a tad old for the part, and not helped by having to perform the 1st act with what looked like the Blue Peter advent crown on her head. Tristan also seems to have raided a pie shop or two on his journeys. I thought the close-ups worked well until the climax when it did get a bit confusing - i had to watch the ending 3 times just to figure out who was dead and who was alive and not helped by Tristan's reluctance to stay dead!
