LOVEFiLM Review True Grit

  • 5 stars out of 5

    By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM

The Coens return with their reinterpretation of Charles Portis' novel True Grit, with 14-year-old newcomer Hailee Steinfeld impressive as Mattie Ross.

  • A classic western in the old style

    [Highly rated reviewer]

This really is a straight down the line honest to goodness western in the old style i.e. 50's and 60's. Unsurprising because its based on an old John Wayne film but surprising that the Coen brothers haven't put more of their own style in.

There are visual Coen flourishes (including two lovely widescreen shots as the characters travel) as well as the recycling of several previously used actors although the standout is Hailee Steinfeld as the feisty little girl. There is some great banter-like dialogue between her and a number of the male staff which really does add a lightness to the film. Matt Damon continues his rise with an excellent representation of a vain but 'fish out of water' Texas ranger whilst Barry Pepper is the great sheepskin wearing baddy with honour in his heart.

A lot of the talk has been about Jeff Bridges first return to the Coens since playing 'The Dude'. I forsee a problem for Jeff in that he has now played two drunken layabouts with hearts of gold within the space of 2 years 'type-casting'?? His chewy tone, added to the need to appear drunk does render him incomprehensible occasionally, which isn't great, but you don't miss much of the story.

This is an enjoyable film with a few flaws but I'd say its for a specialist audience i.e. one that likes their westerns. its not going to convert people on its own to either the Coens or new fans but for those that do, its a good solid film.

  • Try something different!

Wasn't sure if we would enjoy this, but we loved it! For once a film with a great script and not something which relied on special-effects or fast action. Hilarious at times, sometimes sad - always incredibly well-acted. If you enjoy something a little bit different - try this one!

You need real grit and determination to get through this one; seem to remember the original being more exciting some how, but that might have been memory legend rather than reality. Two stars recognising the performances of Hailee Steinfield (as Mattie Rose) and Matt Damon (as LaBoeuf)

Modern western remake. Jeff Bridges. I don’t do westerns. Boring and predictable. Yawn Yawn. But this is a Cohen Brothers film with Matt Damon so some will like it. Not for me.

What a pointless, boring film this is. There is a reason that they stopped making old style westerns. They also used that mumbling guy from No Country for Old Men. Speak clearly man!
