Warm, funny and very moving, the film revolves around the themes of grief and loss. Alan Rickman & Juliet Stevenson are excellent as the central characters & I defy you not to have 'got something in your eye' at least once by the end of the film.

  • As Minghella is no longer with us, he deserves to be watched

Fortunately most of the reviews here are positive, and rightly so. I especially admire those who have 'lost' someone close, and still watched it. Stevenson is great, and Rickman has lot of fun. Minghella went on to grander works, but this remains an excellent film.

Oh so sad but on the other hand it made you feel happy that two people could love each other ( and miss each other) so much.

Music was great and helped to bring on the handkerchief moments. I loved this film from Anthony Mingella

So many reasons to enjoy this film. Juliet Stephenson is brilliant in her detailed portrayal of th grief stricken young woman. Alan Rickman for once not playing a 'bad guy'. Michael Maloney hilarious as the new boy friend. The scene where he gives his CV in a couple of minutes while hopping is just a shining piece of comedy, while at the same time you feel that he's trying everything to get through to the girl.

I've always avoided this as my partner was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 1993. However, after 18 years, 3 lots of cancer and a stroke she is still holding her own in a nursing home. I have at last had the courage to watch this film and found it emotionally helpful as I am living a life of someone bereaved but with the loved one still alive and disabled.

Juliet Stevenson gives one of her best performances moving between humour and despair with a lot of laughter and anger mixed in.

Direction excellent and I loved the music. Glad I've got round to watching it at last!

Fifteen minutes into this sombre, listless, depressing film and I switched it off. In those few minutes I could see that the director had mistaken `shouting` for drama, and the inclusion of irrelevant scenes for `character development`. I can only assume that the high number of stars this film has garnered is from the sort of person who's favourite channel is BBC2.

For the rest of us mere mortals, it's awful.
