If your knowledge of Kazakkstan comes from the Sacha Baron Cohen character then you should watch 'Tulpan' which gives some insight into the hard life of nomads on the steppe.

A young man's dream of living a traditional kazach lifestyle in the steppe herding, but with a modern convenience of solar panels and satelite tv. But the last girl - posible match - from the steppe,Tulip, dream of nothing else but to leave the steppe and go to a college. Dreams at times seam to be so unachievable. The gentle sense of humour, likable characters ... enjoyable film.

Honest, decent, beautifully filmed portrait of life on the steppe. Good acting, fine people, lovely songs and terrific photography. Huge documentary value.

Rather liked it, though it's hard to say why. Gentle story, interesting view into another way of living - don't think I could handle the dust!

This film is gentle, slow moving, humerous, enabling the viewer to believe that they are peering in on a real nomad family ,living in a remote, barren environment and dealing with everyday living. This includes trying to find a bride for a young man who wishes to manage his own flock of sheep. This is difficult when suitable females are few and live far away. The actors in the film apparently had to live in a yurt for a month before filming so that they gelled as a family and the acting is very naturalistic. The youngest child runs free which I think enhances the film. I loved it.

  • Amusing take on life in Kazakhstan

This is an unusual film about a young man returning to the hard life as a shepherd on the steppes of Kazakhstan where he is desperately looking for a wife. Creatively filmed, with a very light-hearted take on coping with a harsh life where it is difficult to survive. Some extraordinary scenes including the birth of a lamb. Recommended.
