Turandot At The Forbidden City Of Beijing.
I doubt if Puccini ever realised the true potential of his Opera. But he certainly had the vision to write about a foreign land and its people. It is in Zhang Yimou's brilliant mind that this great work is given life. I won't forget Zubin Mehta, who gives the work it's soul. I now realise how limited the potential of any classical work is without the collaborative effort of writer/composer, conductor and the director. If you thought opera was uninteresting, than you owe it to yourself to see this. Even if you are an aficionado of Opera you need to see this even more, to realise how limiting the work was without Zhang Yimou's vision. This disk is also the only example of DVD where the multiple camera angles are used to its fullest potential. The costumes are amazing. The setting of Beijing is even more fitting for this brilliant work. Theres excellent making of documentary on the disk. There is also an excellent PCM soundtrack of the opera with images. I only wish the sound on the opera itself was a little better. All in all this is possibly the finest example of sound and vision.
I rented Turandot in the Forbidden City because I was there. It was outdoors on a stunning evening in Beijing and the production was magical. The sound and singing were excellent. The DVD does not do justice to the performance but the sound is better than I had expected. The voices sound echoing but good, particularly Lui.
