Twelfth Night

In 1978, the BBC set itself the task of filming all of William Shakespeare's plays for television. The resulting productions, renowned for their loyalty to the text, utilised the best theatrical and television directors and brought great performances from leading contemporary actors. Viola and Sebastian are identical twins, separated by a shipwreck. Landing in Illyria, Viola disguises herself as her brother and goes into the service of the Duke Orsino. When the Duke sends her to help him woo the Lady Olivia, the obstacles of unrequited love, self-deceit and mistaken identity soon lead an assortment of lovers on a merry dance. Perhaps the most popular of Shakespeare's comedies, Twelfth Night considers the nature of love: true love, self-love and friendship

    not the best

After watching so many Hollywood films this seemed very low budget,

i wasn't able to settle down and enjoy it, I was (stupidly) thrown by the language. I might try it again with lower expectations, but after Much Ado About Nothing and Romeo & Juliet I'm not too sure.

Felicity, (didn't fill me with electricity)

In this version of Twelfth Night, Viola is played by Felicity Kendall. She just seems far too upbeat throughout.

I know Viola is wonderfully plucky and a true survivor but she is admirable because underneath there is terrible sadness.

She has just been shipwrecked and washed upon hostile lands with nothing more than what she is standing up in. She has the almost certain knowledge that her dear twin brother has not survived.

No one has told this to Felicity. She was just cheerful! As cheerful as she was in The Good Life whenever their pigs accidently got in to the neighbours garden.

I would recommend the Trevor Nunn version. The whole cast is superb in that film and Imogen Stubbs will break your heart as Viola. Practically every time she opens her mouth in that production my eyes well up with tears.
