    Disturbing and confrontational cinema

Billed as an 'experimental horror film' this film is only for those who love French arthouse cinema. The film is about primitive human nature - violence and sex - and follows a couple through the Californian desert who are alienated from each other and the environment. What I liked is the way initially nothing much seems to happen and the film slowly builds a sense of dread and danger - before the final violent explosion in the final 15 minutes. There is also a brave critique of America which is portrayed as hostile and menacing. Some of the acting felt awkward and the sex scenes unconvincing - but I found this to be an uncompromising and challenging film.
