The pilot for what became a controversial and cult TV series was released on video in Europe as a surrealist parody of soap opera, full of deliberately over-the-top performances.

Oops! No episodes on this DVD

This is the disc with 'bonus features' DVD for season 1, containing very dull cast interviews, lots of David Lynch patting-on-the-back, and (bizarrely) a very long interview with an old lady about pies.

Don't rent this unless you're really interested in pie.

    Twin Peaks beats all comers!

No other series has, or probably ever will match the same level of witticism and weirdness as Dacvid Lynch managed to in Twin Peaks. The surreal, dark and often amusing story of Dale Cooper, an FBI agent sent to investigate the murder of Laura Palmer, a local highschool girl.

Along the way we are introduced to a plethora of strange and interesting characters from The Log Lady to The Man From Another Place, probably the most memorable character in the series.

Don't expect the mystery of Laura's Death to be cleared up in this series though. If anything, things just get more confusing as the series carries on, but that is what makes it so engaging.

Allow your self to be swept up by the tide and go with the flow in one of the best TV series of all time.

    The mystery deepens

The second disc in the set features episodes 2, 3 and 4 of the TV series.

The plot gets a lot more complicated now, with the first of the infamous 'dream sequences' featuring a backwards talking dancing midget... you heard me. Cooper shows that he himself is a really quirky character as well as being introduced to many more.

We also learn that Laura Palmer wasn't such a clean cut girl that everyone thought she was.

These three episodes far exceed the greatness of the Pilot and the first episode, which were more of an introduction to the world of Twin Peaks. Now the story is really getting into swing, with more relationships being revealed and more confusion being caused. Great Stuff

    Fantastic

Over a decade on and this is still one of the best pieces of television ever made. Set aside a day and watch all four discs back to back and just try and supress your urge for more. Never missed an episode when first shown on BBC2 and i cannot wait for the rest to be released on DVD. Does anyone know when?

The special features disc of Twin Peaks

It is recommended only to get this disc if you are looking for extra special features on Twin Peaks season one. The disc itself does not contain any episodes which means it is only for the real die hard Twin Peaks fan. Which is why I loved it.

There is not an extensive array of extras, but what there is, is substantial enough to be enjoyable. The lowlight of the extras is an interview with the owner of the RR Stop where the diner scenes were shot. It's just not that interesting.

By and far the best extra is 'Learning to Speak in the Red Room' with the Man From Another Place. A basic course in how to speak backwards. Just brilliant.

There are 17 postcards from the actors themselves, each telling their own little stories, whether related to the show or not. The glaring ommision from these ostcards is Sherilyn Fenn AKA Audrey Horne. She doesn't feature at all in the extras which is surprising considering her large role in the series.

    Keep it complex

Every twist and turn astonishes, every subtle glance tells a thinly veiled story. Having rented disc 1 & 2 of this box set, I cancelled the remaining discs and bought it. This multi-facetted treasure will have to be viewed from every angle to truly see the whole. The acting, particularly from Kyle MacLachlan and Sherylin Fenn, is superb, the characters are spun from the deepest recesses of our own insecurity about perceived 'normalness', the plot thickens constantly, yet becomes harder and harder to cling on to, the sets are mysterious, atmospheric, almost ethereal. Characters, again notably Kylk Maclachlan's, have an altogether more human dichotomy than any other TV series or film I have ever come across (eg, Agent Dale Cooper [KM] appears and acts very methodically, very logically, yet displays odd tendancies toward a superstitious nature, and a trust in the inexplicable and supernatural). EVERYONE is deceiving someone, and everyone is up to something. Surreality crops up in dribs and drabs in a way that is touching, funny and complex.

    Nothing is what it seems

    Disappointing and overrated

Pleasant enough and quite quirky, but ultimately very undeserving of it's reputation. Lynch's subsequent work (Elephant Man aside), has similarly shown him to be the emperor's new clothes.

    Outstanding...

One of the best television series ever produced. David Lynch brings to 'Twin Peaks' the same dark imagination and excellence of production values as his other films. However, unlike much of his other work, which is let down by excessive and often incomprehensible surrealism, 'Twin Peaks' maintains a more even balance between suspense, plot development and more ethereal aspects.

Kyle MacLachlan brings unexpected wit and warmth to the character of Special Agent Dale Cooper... His performance is utterly original.

    The best episodes by far

The third disc in the box set contains the final three episodes of season one.

Things take an even more confusing turn in these episodes with people who seemed like nice people revealing their darker side and vice versa. There are a lot more relationships going on in this community than you think! We also get to meet the log lady more, and learn just what a crazy woman she is!

Arson, assassination, murder and a cliffhanger ending guarentee that this disc is the best of the whole set. A definite must see.
