After suffering a career-ending injury, a former college football star (Matthew McConaughey) aligns himself with one of the most reknown bookies in the sports-gambling business (Al Pacino).

Not bad ... but not great
By a customer from Northampton, England , 10 Mar 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
Saw this on a flight to Malaysia. This average drama has a good performance from Pacino but it is his usual bulstering larger than life characterisation we have seen in many of his films. He won't be winning any wards for this movie. I usually like Matthew Mc but in this film he seems to be going through the motions. Plot was average, not much excitement. The script and exchanges between characters were ok. Not really much else to say about this average film.- Was this review helpful to you?

(76)Suprisingly good
By Pixz (19 reviews) from Yeovil , 02 Apr 2012I was suprised by how good this film was. There's an excellent sub-plot about addiction, which, if you're not interested in it, you can easily discount it and still enjoy the film. I'm not a great fan of Al Pacino, but he, Matthew McConaughey and Rene Russo are excellent together, and the supporting cast are good too. A really meaty film.- Was this review helpful to you?

Watchable, but stretched out a little
By djhaddock (1 review) from Manchester , 05 Sep 2010If you're a fan of Al Pacino, this movie is worth a watch. He puts in another fine performance as a betting guru who runs in '0900' advice line who makes commission from his punters winnings.
It what is undeniably an interesting concept worth exploring the film touches on a number of different aspects surrounding a multi-million illegal (but increasingly less so) industry but fails to go into any detail, choosing to focus on the two main characters: Pacino and Matthew McConaughey.
McConaughey plays a pro quarterback whose career is put into limbo by a potentially irrecoverable knee injury. With a habit of picking winners, he is offered the opportunity to use his talent for greater reward than his friend's appreciation.
It is easy to forget that this film is in fact based on a true 'Million Dollar Man', something that makes the events that occur all the more fascinating.
Slightly too long with somewhat irrelevant side plots, it is however a decent watch even if you don't like or understand gambling.- Was this review helpful to you?

fantastic movie, not to be missed!
By a customer from London , 01 Jul 2009Great movie, apparently beased on a real story. It's about a guy (Matthew McConaughey) who, after a sports injury, he starts working in the sports betting industry. Because he is clever enough (and with an 'insider' experience too) he can predict quite well the results of the games, thus giving 'advice' to those who want to bet money on those games. One day, a 'big fish' of the industry (Al Pacino) hires him and that's the moment when the guy realises the magnitude of the money this industry moves. The problem is that the pressure is horrendous because, in truth, there is no way to give scientific predictions of the results of the games; the movie is excellent by showing how fast you go from the total success to the deepest failure, also how this 'industry' preys on the greed and desperation of the people. The interesting thing is, also, the STRIKING SIMILARITIES WITH THE RECENTLY COLLAPSED FINANCIAL SYSTEM, where everything was, at the end, a huge bet that gave billions to a handful of people and, in the same way, has pulverised many more. With this perspective, and as a parable of the financial system, the movie is a great eye-opener. The acting is fantastic: Matthew McConaughey surprised me as a very good actor and Al Pacino keeps his star quality (...even Renee Russo as his wife, acts reasonably well), the direction impeccable and the script has a modern message...you can't ask for more!- Was this review helpful to you?
