The lead parts are played by two non-actors - James Taylor and Dennis Wilson, and their inability to act gives the movie the feeling of an existential western. What lines they do deliver are thrown away and it's only the fine acting of Walter Oates as GTO that pulls this movie through. Taylor and Wilson drift through the film and it is the cars who are really the stars. Considered a ground-breaking movie, it was part of the New Hollywood and its style has dated. If you want to watch a great road movie from the same period watch Vanishing Point starring Barry Newman. Its hipper, cooler, faster, and Newman can act.
