The Two Ronnies were great family entertainment like Morecombe and Wise that you just don't get anymore. 'Safe' humour has been replaced by more risqu? and shocking humour.
I enjoy the olde humour but fail to see how sixteen years worth of shows can be condensed to just 45mins. At even one 30min show a year, that?s 8hrs worth of shows. It?s this that lets the DVD down considerably.
Admittedly the DVD contains some great memorable sketches, brilliantly written and performed fantastically by R&R, but also misses some of the others. There?s also nothing to tie them together ? its just one long compilation.
The DVD is also devoid of any 'extras' like interviews, pictures, etc - just a collection of sketches haphazardly thrown together.
It would get 5 stars for the humour, but deduct a star for lack of content and another for the poor duration.
I grew up on the Two Ronnies and absolutely loved them. They had a real comic genius, of a gentler kind of comedy than that normally found today, but this is an extremely poor representation of that genius. How can any selection that claims to be the 'best of' not even feature the 'four candles' sketch that always appears in listing of 'best ever comedy moments'.
Splodge from Portsmouth lists the best sketches, but many of the others are a real disappointment and really not representative of their genius at all.
