Fans of Peter Sellers rate this British venture, made before he started to believe his own publicity, as one of the best things he did. It's a prison comedy that predates Porridge with a snarling stand-off between cocky convict Sellers, his cellmates Bernard Cribbins and David Lodge, and paranoid warden Lionel Jeffries. The plot — about a group of prisoners trying to break back into jail after a heist — is wonderfully developed and there are delightful cameos along the way from Irene Handl, Wilfrid Hyde White and Liz Fraser.

Peter Sellers stars in this comedic caper as Dodger Lane, a wily thief currently serving the last couple weeks of a prison sentence along with two of his partners in crime. Always looking for a way to make a big score, Dodger has concocted an ingenious plan for a jewel heist while maintaining a rock solid alibi: conduct the crime from inside the prison. With the help of a morally lax clergyman named Soapy Stevens, the trio plan to skip out prison, steal a maharajah's jewels and sneak back behind bars all on the day before they're due to be released. Unfortunately, a new and borderline psychotic prison guard arrives a few days before the heist and proceeds to make life behind bars a little more uncomfortable than Dodger and company would like.
Those golden years of British films (1950-1970) produced many a great crime comedy.
Peter Sellers and the often underrated Wilfred Hyde-White excel in this jolly jaunt about Prison life and a cunning plan for one last big job! The supporting cast are excellent, and I am sure the old meek and mild prison warder must have served as a model for Mr Barraclough of 'Porridge' fame.
The good black and white footage has transferred well to DVD. Recommended.
