Although Germany was not allowed to develop Submarines after the end of the first world war (following the Treaty of Versailles); they did keep up secret plans to develop U-Boats which they were later allowed to put into practise following the German-British naval treaty of 1935. By the outbreak of the second world war the Kriegsmarine had 57 submarines, a small number but a highly effective force. This documentary tells the story of the U-Boats using original newsreel footage.
