Dylan Thomas's ...
By eric#14 from MILTON KEYNES , 23 Sep 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Dylan Thomas's wonderful world of words put into moving pictures. This idea works because Richard Burton narrates . Burton's voice is hypnotic. A film i love to watch (& more importantly listen to) over & over again.- Was this review helpful to you?

(11)Dylan's poetry lost in translation
By a customer , 08 May 2012This movie just doesn't work. Beautiful filming location - raw & full of character. A solid cast at first view. However... Dylan's great lyricism gets lost in scenes which seem to chase each other in orbital detachment (to the poetry itself) and only succeed in overloading the audience's visual sense to the detriment of the actual words. I had to force myself to watch till the end so bored was I becoming with what looked in the end to me like an indulgence of 'star screen time' and not a transcript of Dylan's talent.- Was this review helpful to you?

Excellent cast but very dull film
By trainbuff (34 reviews) from Waterlooville , 03 Dec 2011Splendid cast, but they were not allowed to develop their characters, as the film kept chopping between scenes. Frankly I got very bored and stopped watching less than half way through. A disapointment, as I have seen the stage play and really liked it.- Was this review helpful to you?

A bit high brow
By VFF (105 reviews) from London , 09 Apr 2011Richard Burton's voice is terriffic and the rhythm of the piece good. The film has some great actors, the colour and the quality of the production is very good.A classic piece of Welsh literature.
It is quite theatrical and arty. It helps if you like classical literature or enjoy arty programs on BBC4.
It was a bit high brow for me. If you like regular drama, or action and adventure films, you may not enjoy it, so be warned.- Was this review helpful to you?

It helps if you are Welsh but its universal
By 5ft7offootballheaven (300 reviews) from London , 27 Mar 2011Religion Sex and Death is what Richard Burton is reputed to have said that this play is about. If you dont know what it is - its basically a play for voices which was meant to be listened too rather than watched - this causes inevitable problems for a film but its different and dont be put off from it because of this. Its a day in the life of a sleepy coastal town told through the different perspectives of all the town's inhabitants. Its a multitude of vignettes. If you have experienced a sleepy coastal town in Wales for any length of time you will recognise the characters from the prim, to the religious, to the fecund, to the disapproving, to the drunk, to the diligent, to the happy, to the sad and you get the drift. Its sad and funny and done quite well. Richard Burton - well the voice of Richard Burton is sublime. Iechu Dda.- Was this review helpful to you?

MYOPIC VISION
By a customer from TUNBRIDGE WELLS, ENGLAND , 20 Jan 2011A self-contradiction of course to present a radio play as a movie, but this is fun. It gets the sense of Dylan Thomas's poetry and libidinous sensibility rather well - all the girls come across better than the men, despite the archetypal characterization. Thomas was never a great poet by any means because he lacks profundity and often indulges in purple verse, but he is amusing. A better poetry movie is Mirror, but this compares quite well.- Was this review helpful to you?
