After a string of routine action thrillers, Steven Seagal hit the jackpot with this slick nautical spin on the Die Hard concept. Portraying possibly the unlikeliest cook in the history of cinema, Seagal is the US navy's only hope when a crack squad of terrorists, led by Tommy Lee Jones, hijacks his ship. Seagal lacks natural charisma, but at least he's marginally less wooden than the likes of Chuck Norris, and a flamboyant performance from Jones, plus some sterling work from fellow baddies Gary Busey and Colm Meaney, more than compensate for his deficiencies. Former Baywatch babe Erika Eleniak has little to do but pop out of a cake and scream a lot, but provides the requisite slice of glamour. Like Seagal, director Andrew Davis earned his spurs with mainly straight-to-video fodder, but here he never misses a beat and stages some awesome set pieces.
Often risible, always predictable action movie in which one man conquers all, and consisting of a succession of slickly done martial arts combats and gun battles. For diehard fans of the star, or fans of Die Hard.
Good solid action fare all the way.
No matter how annoying Segal is, he has made this movie his. Don't get me wrong, I can't stand the geezer. However, anyone else would have failed where he excells. When he picks up a weapon, he looks like he can use it. When he constructs a satelite phone, he seems to know what he is doing.
Fans of the action movie genre will not be dissapoined by ths little gem.
An above average Steven Seagal effort - it just shows that with a strong supporting cast and a larger budget he can hack it in the big leagues, just so long he isn't required to do too much character acting!
Action man Steven Seagal has turned down the chance to team up with pal Sylvester Stallone, Mickey Rourke and Dolph Lundgren in new film The Expendables over a reported dispute with one of the movie's producers. The Under Siege star has worked with producer Avi Lerner on a handful of films, but insiders report the pair has fallen out. A source tells movie new website Moviehole.net, "Theres too much bad blood between them." But the all-star action film is close to adding another big Hollywood... Read more
