After a string of routine action thrillers, Steven Seagal hit the jackpot with this slick nautical spin on the Die Hard concept. Portraying possibly the unlikeliest cook in the history of cinema, Seagal is the US navy's only hope when a crack squad of terrorists, led by Tommy Lee Jones, hijacks his ship. Seagal lacks natural charisma, but at least he's marginally less wooden than the likes of Chuck Norris, and a flamboyant performance from Jones, plus some sterling work from fellow baddies Gary Busey and Colm Meaney, more than compensate for his deficiencies. Former Baywatch babe Erika Eleniak has little to do but pop out of a cake and scream a lot, but provides the requisite slice of glamour. Like Seagal, director Andrew Davis earned his spurs with mainly straight-to-video fodder, but here he never misses a beat and stages some awesome set pieces.
Often risible, always predictable action movie in which one man conquers all, and consisting of a succession of slickly done martial arts combats and gun battles. For diehard fans of the star, or fans of Die Hard.

Good solid action fare all the way.
No matter how annoying Segal is, he has made this movie his. Don't get me wrong, I can't stand the geezer. However, anyone else would have failed where he excells. When he picks up a weapon, he looks like he can use it. When he constructs a satelite phone, he seems to know what he is doing.
Fans of the action movie genre will not be dissapoined by ths little gem.
An above average Steven Seagal effort - it just shows that with a strong supporting cast and a larger budget he can hack it in the big leagues, just so long he isn't required to do too much character acting!
I remember having this on VHS as a kid and there was a lot of tape damage at the bit when Eleniak came out of the cake. Oh, how as young men we loved that bit of the Baywatch woman with a short hair do - which didn't suit her!
Segal is awesome in this - a great film with a superb plot. Busey is superb too - plays a maniac quite well. I liked the review when someone said Segal is believable. That's why he was cool - he looked like he could kick ass. John Rollins once said (and he was a big dude too) that Segal 'really knew all that s**t - and WOULD kick your ass!' - Van Damme was pants compared to Segal.
If you haven't seen this and you like action films - then rent it - it's great and like all Segal films - never stops the action. The sequel (on a train) is great but this is a classic.
Like Die hard - these films work cause the main character is cool and depsite what all say - Segal CAN act.

Although it seems the 'in thing' to hate Seagal these days, the guy was the main man of martial arts action back in the 80's while Van Damme was only just beginning Seagal had a loyal following and his chop socky aikido style was a more realistic alternative to Van Damme's splits and kicks or the flying in mid air badly dubbed ninja films which where popular at the time. Under Siege (or Die Hard: At Sea) is lighter on the kind of action that made Seagal a star (Above The Law, Out For Justice) but is easily his best, whether you like martial arts or straight action this has enough of both to keep adrenaline junkies happy.
A generally good action film.
I ain't that big of a Seagal fan but its a good night in.
Tommy Lee Jones rescues the film with his awesome acting and if its mindless action you want then who better than Seagal?
Don't watch it with your girlfriend unless you want her to dump you!
Keep it Real!
Steven Seigal never fails to make a good film , brilliant actor
An entertaining and well performed movie full of adrenalin pumping action. All of the cast deliver a movie which captivates the audience from start to end.
this film was really good we enjoyed it
This has got to be Steven Seagal's trademark film. If it's a battle between Under Siege 1 and Under Siege 2 this film wins hands down! In the same way that people remember Arnold Schwarzenegger for the Terminator films, people will automatically think of the Under Siege films when the name Steven Seagal pops up. Only thing I found a bit unrealistic is, how does a stripper who gets caught up in the whole conflict suddenly seem so at ease with a massive machine gun. But as usual with action films you have suspend your disbelief to a certain extend! Not the sort of film you'd watch with your girlfriend but an excellent film for the lads! 4 out of 5!
I always thought chefs were hard men in their kitchens but this guy goes to the extreme. Steven Seagal is not a great actor but he used to make great action films - this film was certainly full of fight scenes. For me the final knife scene kind of ruined it as prior to it the fight scenes looked plausible - this fight was anything but.
