  • Miserable but worthwhile

Beautifully acted by Samantha Morton along with other brilliant cast members. This isn't a barrel of laughs nor an easy ride but it is emotionally satisfying for an audience prepared to suffer along with Morton's loose canon and self destructive character towards a superbly crafted and acted denouement.

Mike Leigh without the gags and a demonstration of just how good Morton can be in challenging roles.

  • Samantha Morton naked but a dire movie

    Rated - 2.0 stars

Unrelentingly grim and depressing snapshot of a mentally unstable girl spiralling down to rock bottom, via a series of meaningless sexual encounters, before she finally gets 'better', the final voiceover in the closing scene is the best, and really only uplifting, moment in an otherwise bleak hour and a half. Unlikable characters don't help you empathise. Samantha Morton reveals all but that in itself isn't enough to sit through the rest for. 2 dire stars.

At last! a film that doesn't shy away from the themes of loss , longing and loneliness. The impact of the loss of a mother particularly and how it can leave a woman feeling rudderless and needing to grow up quickly is well portrayed, the character using her mothers clothes like a dressing up box, trying out an adult role.

It accurately shows how unexpressed grief can unhinge a person and how the process is a difficult one where the relationship was unresolved. Also, how loss preoccupies you and how in this culture one is supposed to carry on as normal when the weirdest thing ever has occured.

Sex as distraction, comfort and access to feeling alive (even when experienced through pain) is accurately presented.

It is the birth of the child that creates continuity and hope for the future, a focus for the sisters and a new bond between them, which incorporates the mothering of each other.

Beautiful film, understated acting; someone, I suspect, has been there...
