Alluding liberally to the troubled lives of Rubin Carter and Mike Tyson, this prison boxing drama from Walter Hill exemplifies the director's predilection for studies of no-nonsense tough guys taking care of business. Hill rattles through the preamble, which witnesses both the sentencing of heavyweight champion Ving Rhames for rape and lifer Wesley Snipes attracting the attention of wily mobster Peter Falk after whupping a white supremacist in Sweetwater Prison's combat cage. A rumble is inevitable and when it comes, it's unrivalled in its brutality and appreciation of a much-maligned sport. Snipes keeps his head down, but Rhames excels as the cocky champ.
Tough no-holds barred boxing drama, a very masculine movie that has no room for sentiment but delivers a lethal punch.
Excellent film. It's a lot deeper than just another film with a boxing theme. Wesley Snipes and Ving Rhames both play excellent roles. Soundtrack very good too if you like gangster rap or even if you don't! Worth watching a few times or maybe even adding to your DVD collection.
Not a bad film but not great either. If you are a boxing fan then go for it.
