Disappointed to be unimpressed

I don't give up easily on films but I did on this one. OK, I'm reasonably used to French films and the 'nouvelle vague' etc but I found this tedious and more about cinematographic techniques than anything else. I'm willing to be persuaded otherwise but until then, I pass. (The snatch of conversation I remember most is where the husband asks his wife not to wear such ugly knickers!)- Was this review helpful to you?

Sometime ago I decided I would try and see as much of the great directors work, all the masterpieces as well as the more obscure ones. This was a pretty silly idea to be fair. Viewing this film was as a result of this arbitrary decision.
The film exhibits the usual snippets of the central characters life and their musings on life. Sometimes this has worked other times not so. This is a 'not so' film, the central character, the 'Une femme mariee' didn't hold my attention had nothing to say and did nothing more than cheat on her husband whom she accused of not trusting her.
Maybe I missed the point but I'm not sure there would have been one to enjoy/digest. Frankly, this is only the serious art house film goers who are looking to the discuss it afterwards.- Was this review helpful to you?

Better than I feared
By a customer from Innerleithen , 15 Jul 2010I checked other people's reviews after the film arrived and thought I'd maybe made a mistake; however, it was better than I feared. There's too much pretentious philosophizing with characters making long, involved speeches about the meaning of life and love; but all in all it kept my attention with sylish film shots and sensuous scenes. Seeing clothing and interior decor from the sixties brought back memories!
The DVD duration of the film is shorter than listed above, it's about one and half hours, but maybe the figure above includes the extras.- Was this review helpful to you?

Not for everyone

I missed this one at the time, but if I had come across it I would probably not have watched any more. What one makes of it depends on whether it is seen as coolly ironic or a pretentious product of its time. However, it fails on both fronts. The 'irony' just goes on and on, relentlessly. As a shot of what the world was like in 1964 it is more interesting, but I still wanted to stop watching. After an hour I gave up. Unusual. I am usually the last one to leave the party, but this one...- Was this review helpful to you?

One of J-LG's best
By a customer from London , 12 Nov 2009This is a long lost classic from 64. Apparently the original title was Femme Mariee, making it more generalised and Macha Meril does a fantastic self effacing portrayal of a vain but continually distracted wife, alternatively captivating and irritating.
The exploration of superficiality of opinion acting references and cheeky underwear references and slightly awkward bodily positions make it very representative of its time.
But there are themes just as relevant today especially the prostitution analogy - looking forward to Deux or trois choses... - witness the almost horrific dialogue between 2 teenage girls anticipating what will happen when one will lose her virginity, after Charlotte's idly flicked through women's lingerie ads.
Coming after Bande a Part and before Alphaville this is Godard slightly depressed but bursting with ideas. And dig that VW joke!- Was this review helpful to you?
