Dudley Moore gives one of his better performances in this gently diverting and broadly satisfactory remake of the 1948 Preston Sturges comedy about a symphony orchestra conductor who suspects his young wife of making beautiful music with a handsome violinist. Indeed, as both a comedian and musician himself, Moore could hardly have better credentials for the role played by Rex Harrison in the original of a jealous conductor, while Nastassja Kinski is suitably coquettish as his flirting spouse. A slighter film than the original, but also a pacier one, with some entertaining helpings of slapstick.
A not entirely happy mixture of romance, farce, melodrama and wit, but in general a pretty entertaining concoction and the last major film of its talented writer-director.
It's about time that the great Preston Sturges comedies had an airing on DVD. This disc has a crisp transfer, with good sound, and even the 'classic' black and white print and dated acting styles can't hide the wickedly black study of relationships, and particularly sexual jealousy. The 'hero''s murderous fantasies are terrrific and the attempt to act them out in real life hilarious. Let's have more of the greats!
I would actually give this film four and a half stars as I thought it was great.
Rex Harrison is brilliant as the eccentric conductor Sir Alfred and the supporting cast are equally as good.
A great mixture of murder mystery, romance and comedy, my wife and I laughed a lot watching this film and enjoyed every minute.
The only caveat is the slapstick comedy which is overdone at times, but this is a minor quibble in the whole scheme of things.
Recommended if you enjoy older films and especially if you are a fan of Mr. Harrison.
