  • Hilarious gem of a martial arts movie

    Rated - 4.0 stars
By McClennan (424 reviews) from St Helens , 31 Aug 2005

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Jet Li is a boy brought up as a dog, trained to kill by some cockney gangsters operating in a cockney accented Glasgow. Sounds ludicrous, it is but man is it enjoyable. Riffing from Aliens, Clockwork Orange, Werner Herzog, in parts with some minor director showboating, it's brilliantly entertaining. With Tony Jaa getting some rave reviews for Ong-Bak it's nice to see that Jet Li's efforts in this completely absurd film come through. Surefire tongue-in-cheek mixed with great action sequences this was a real surprise with some real laugh out loud moments. Martial arts and comedy fans, check this out.

  • The leash is off, the fury is on for both Hoskins and Li

    Rated - 3.0 stars
    By Imp (1 review) , 14 Oct 2012
The only thing missing from this film is a credible story and to be honest the perfomances of Bob Hoskins and Jet Li as the main power characters and of Morgan Freeman as the guide to reason, certainly make up for that lack.

Danny (Jet Li) is perfectly tailored to demonstrate the horror of extreme schooling, absolute single minded obedience with no understanding of anything but the control over him

Bob Hoskins, as usual, manages to bring conviction and entertainment to a character who basically has no character. His matter of fact attitude to Danny's situation somehow adds an element of humour to the horror.

Morgan Freeman's 'blind piano tuner' along with his daughter create a believable and enjoyable softening by almost accidently leading Danny out of the dark and into a new and happy life.

All in all a good night for action fans, with enough warmth to offset the violence.

  • Jet Li does Shakespeare

    Rated - 1.5 stars
By cptrelentless (33 reviews) from London , 24 Aug 2010
Jet Li expands his dramatic range by portraying the tortured quasimodo character, bestial by nature and design. As Bob (Rab C Nesbitt) 'oskin's pitbull assassin in the mean streets of Glasgow, where the Cockney mafiosi rule this sunny city of Georgian architecture and rolling parkland with an iron fist, our hero meets a blind African American piano tuner, who regales him with tales of pianos and the Bronx. Our hero endures the agony of his soul crying out for the pianissimo, and Li's character portrayal of the _naif_ 'Danny' can begin. We spend much time exploring the flowering of Danny-Algernon, as in the womb of the surprisingly well apportioned flat of our piano tuner and pasty white piano efficianado daughter he grows to overcome his distopian past, having escaped his handlers from a machine-gunned jag. Watch the first twenty minutes and then fast forward to the last half hour. You will have missed nothing and suffered little.

  • One Word Summary

    Rated - 1.0 star
    By a customer from Edinburgh , 23 Aug 2010
For me, 'Unleashed' can be summed up in one word, and that word is BIZARRE. Everything about it is odd; a man raised as a dog somehow possesses amazing martial arts skills, which he uses at the behest of a gangster in a Glasgow which looks more like Detroit, and where everyone's a Cockney... I could go on but you probably get the idea. Coherence is not a strong factor in this film. If you're a Jet Li or a martial arts fan, you might enjoy it; otherwise, there's every chance that it will simply irritate the life out of you.
