Robert Redford and Michelle Pfeiffer star in this romantic drama set in a Miami television newsroom. Redford plays the veteran former White House correspondent who takes small-town girl Pfeiffer under his wing, helping her overcome stage fright and seeing her career as a television journalist take off as his idles. It's all tosh, of course, but the Star Is Born theme of male self-sacrifice is finely manipulated by director Jon Avnet, and, as a three-hanky movie, it's not to be sniffed at. It's a crying shame, however, that the talents of Stockard Channing and Kate Nelligan are wasted in relatively minor roles as hard-bitten rival news anchors.
Very much a 'so what?' movie, a sentimental weepie about what are presumably intended as glamorous and powerful lives; outside its home territory, it looks and sounds ridiculous.
The girls in my family reckon that this is the best 'weepy' of the lot. But that shouldn't prevent the boys enjoying one of Michelle Pfieffer's cleverest performances as a 'wannabe' TV presenter. Clever casting has Robert Redford as her mentor and the pair of them sizzle. No gratuitous sex so most of the family can watch. A mostly happy, sometimes dramatic, love story with a heart-breaking ending. Very, very enjoyable.
Ladies (and gentlemen) , this is an absolute tear jerker!! One of my favourite films of all time. Michelle Pfeifer and Robert Redford sets sparks flying in this beautiful emotive tale of a women who wishes to rise from the bottom to the top in both love and her career. Its not all plain sailing, but the story, the chemistry, the comedy, the romance and of course the heart wrenching ending is a must see for anyone who loves a genuinly great film.
