An enjoyable film, something different
By a customer from Dunfermline (Scotland) , 12 Jun 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
In the Italy of early 1939 an English woman has her world turned upside down by a chance meeting with a refugee, an offer of marraige from a wealthy British politician and some sexual advances from a local ex-pat. Set in the world of the weathy ex-pats this Somerset Maughan story is a treat. It is well acted and filmed.
It also has a back ground of threat from the Italian Nazi's- Was this review helpful to you?

(5)Unexpectedly this little known film is very good
By Bobsview (554 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 05 Apr 2013A period thriller / romantic drama set in the period just preceding the outbreak of war in Europe in 1939 Florence. It is an elegantly presented tangled love story and thriller that takes place over only 2 or 3 days but a lot happens (contrary to some of the other reviews).Kristin Scott Thomas is excellent as usual and lifts the rating of the film. Her character is impoverished but hankers after retaining the high life but at the same time looking for love. I felt this story was credibly done and the characters were developed and I enjoyed it. Nothing to do with Aston Villa!- Was this review helpful to you?

Disappointing and long!
By relica (7 reviews) from North London , 23 Nov 2012Very long and quite slow moving. It's a thriller really, but it trundles along until the thriller part in the middle, and then goes downhill again from there.
Aside from that there is the familiar story of a beautiful but poor upper class woman trying to work out whether she should marry the old wealthy man or hold out for love. I struggled with this a bit as I couldn't quite convince myself that Kristin Scott Thomas's character was really that smitten with Sean Penn's (maybe because his wasn't developed enough)
Although there were great actors in it, they seemed to come off a bit wooden in this, and the key longer speeches just didn't seem to be delivered that well or ring true.- Was this review helpful to you?

Sadly disappointing
By a customer , 28 Aug 2012Very disappointing. As a fan of period drama I was looking forward to a film boasting Penn and Scott Thomas, but was sorely disappointed by pedestrian directing, crude camera-work, clumsy writing, jarring music score and an overall feel of DIY film-making. It may have Scott Thomas in it, but The English Patient this most certainly isn't.- Was this review helpful to you?

Surprisingly good...
By BeckyJo (19 reviews) , 27 Jul 2012I really enjoyed this. I didn't expect much when it came through and couldn't even remember why I had put it on my list, but actually the story ticked along nicely and the acting / period settings were good. I think it's definitely worth a watch.- Was this review helpful to you?
