Upstairs, Downstairs 2010
By a customer from Hampshire , 27 Mar 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
I was prepared to be disappointed after the classic and satisfying Downton Abbey (and this is speaking as a classic sci-fi fan), but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this. OK, Jean Marsh as Rose must have had a terrible 6 years off screen to have aged 30+ which did stretch credulity somewhat, but there are some entertaining new characters - especially Anne Reid as the cook, workmanlike as ever- and weaving the story around the build up to WWII has many plot possibilities. There has been no scrimping over the costumes and sets and I am very interested in seeing if the new 6 part series commissioned by the Beeb for 2012 keeps up the momentum.- Was this review helpful to you?

Drama with a political backdrop
By JonathanR (40 reviews) from Peterborough, England , 08 Jan 2012Inevitably everybody is going to be comparing Upstairs Downstairs with Downton Abbey due to them being broadcast in the same time period. In my view Downton has the edge on setting and characterisation but Upstairs Downstairs has more depth in relation to the world in which the drama lives. It was interesting for me seeing the uprising of the fascists in England with Mosley and the blackshirts a part of pre-war history often forgotten about. I hope they make more episodes.- Was this review helpful to you?

Upstairs downstairs ain't no Downtown Abbey
By Em1981 (133 reviews) from London , 10 Oct 2011This is not Bad but not as good as Downtown Abbey as far as period dramas go. If you like period dramas like i do then you will probably enjoy this but there's a little to much period (i.e. war ) than Drama for me. But haven't said that worth a watch on a sunday if you get bored.- Was this review helpful to you?

Upstairs downstairs
By a customer , 30 Aug 2011I never saw the original on telly, so I cant compare it to that or say its not like the old one, etc. Which in a way is good.
Keeley Hawes is really good in this, her accent is impeccable and her performance flawless. The show itself moves at a good pace and keeps your interest, you fascination in their ways of life and the era of London life.
Good, easy watching with a great supporting cast.- Was this review helpful to you?
