Uzumaki

Based on a Japanese comic book, Higuchinsky's UZUMAKI follows the residents of a remote town as they inexplicably become obsessed with spiral shapes. Kirie (Eriko Hatsune), a young schoolgirl, first notices this phenomena when she encounters her boyfriend's father (Ren Osugi) maniacally videotaping a snail crawling up a wall. Later, her brooding beau, Shuichi (Fhi Fan), reveals that the odd behavior goes further--his father has filled an entire room with various spiral objects. And that's merely the beginning of the insanity--soon one classmate arrives at school covered in thick, clear slime (and only on rainy days) and the leader of a girl gang begins wearing her hair in gravity-defying swirly strands. Before long, this growing madness leads to a series of gruesome and unbelievably bizarre deaths. An absurdist thriller of the highest order, UZUMAKI literally wears its weirdness on its twisted sleeve.

    Wierd with a capital W!

This film must be seen to be believed, I could try and explain it to you but to no avail! It is quirky and outstanding both visually and in its narrative. The, verging on ridiculous, story, in which a village is being taken over by spirals, sets, and indeed dictates, the tone of this paranormal and obscure dark comedy. The theme and plot executed so acutely that you really feel for the characters and the situation. The attention to detail is astounding and add an almost kitschness to it. It is Weird with a capital W, and I could not imagine it any other way!

I am a big fan of Japanese cinema and like to ride the edge of the art cinema circuit, which probably helped in my appreciation of this film. I can understand why some people may not appreciate it, but if, like me, you enjoy the spectacle and experimentation of cinema as well as the blockbuster niceties then this is most definitely the film for you!

Dissapointing if you like the comic/manga

I write this review comparing the story to the original in the comic/manga of Junji Ito. I didn't enjoy this film as much as I had hoped I would, the main reason is that the story is different, for example in the manga, the main character has a brother and a mother as well as a father, in this film the mother is dead and there's no mention of a brother, so there's only the father. Uzumaki = spiral in Japanese and that is what this film is about, people becoming cursed/obsessed with spirals. The ending is very disappointing, looks like the director run out of time, as this 2hour movie is around 1/2 of the complete story. So if you like the sound of this, I would recommend you read the comic/manga. If you've already read it, I wouldn't bother with this movie and recommend you spend those 2hours in something more fruitful. I wanted to watch the movie to see how it fared against the comic/manga, and in my opinion it doesn't do the comic/manga justice. As other reviewer's here, I wouldn't classify this a horror movie, although it has terror elements, and 2 or 3 gruesome scenes.
