The film responsible for Natalie Portman's shaven head. And doesn't she look lovely?

V for VERY good
By paul from Portsmouth, England , 27 Mar 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
Their have been a whole glut of comic book adaptations over the last few years, some of them good (X-Men, Blade) some of them bad (The Punisher, Cat Woman) but none of them in the mold of V for Vendetta. None of them as strange and as brilliant and as intelligent as this. Don't watch this expecting lots of fantastic CGI fight scenes, there are only a couple and they are quite small scale but in doing this V doesn't sacrifice style, it has oodles, but the content is considerably more important with a story line more pertinent today than it has possibly ever been. In the not too distant future a totalitarian British government uses fear of terrorism to inflict marshal rule on the masses to keep everyone in their place. Only one man questions this way of governing and decides to rabble rouse the rest of the public. This one man is a modern day Guy Fawkes. The ensuing story is fascinating, hugely emotional, thoughtful, humorous, very dark and strangely romantic - keeping your full attention for the 2hr duration, there are no weak spots in the plot and the acting of Natalie Portman is exceptional. Some strong violence and swearing and an intelligent story line seperate this from the other comic adaptations and make it definitely an adult film, one for grown ups who usually find themselves drawn to cult classics rather than the mainstream Hollywood fare. Very near to being a 5 star movie.- Was this review helpful to you?

Not Bad
By buffyrules (335 reviews) from southend on sea , 07 Jan 2013Visually good but at times all a bit too scattered and lacking depth. Portman did a great job and had a covincing accent. I liked the low budget look to the film but left me craving something more substantial like 1984 or the news!- Was this review helpful to you?

A comic book adaptation that works!
By smidsy (2 reviews) , 17 Jul 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
Prophetic or just a deeply dark imagination of what our future can be? I'm not sure and to be honest it doesn't really matter, this is a film review not a political statement after all.
It is also a film review that cant come to a conclusive score. I cant decide to give 3 or 4 stars. the fact the film looks stunning, the performances from all the cast are good to excellent. (sir Ian's admittedly one dimensional ranting standing out for me) and the flow of the film really works for me swayed it toward the 4.
The final and missing 5 star is the most disappointing thing, after all I really enjoyed this film. It is such a rare thing - a comic book adaptation that works. It just does not go far enough for me. It deserves to be more full on, more brutal. V is a monster, merciless, relentless and seriously insane. Yet you almost instantly 'bond' with him. Emily spends the film in his shadow, you do not connect on anywhere near the same level. I believe this is completely the wrong way round, Emily's story is more compelling and much more relevant to us, V's role in her story is underplayed and is such a missed opportunity.
That is such a long paragraph for such a small point, the simple thing is - watch this film. You will enjoy it, and if you are anything like me then you will be on the internet searching for somewhere to buy a V costume within 2 minutes of the end credits.- Was this review helpful to you?
