This screen adaptation of Sara Paretsky's cult female detective novels stars a rasping, sassy Kathleen Turner as the spiky, difficult, liberal-feminist private eye VI Vic Warshawski. But, thanks to a lousy script, here the investigator becomes a man-fearing, baseball-obsessed pain in the rear, in a film that's sunk by its plot — a lame piece of fluff about a 13 year old and a dodgy inheritance. It's only worth watching for Turner, who desperately attempts to inject some grit into the proceedings, but this first in a hastily abandoned series drags perceptibly throughout. The result is more coddled than hard-boiled.
