I first heard of this film when it was initially released at a select few cinemas, none of which were local to me - at the time I was gutted and didn't know why it wasn't shown. Then once it was released on DVD, I couldn't wait to see it. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a really, really dire film, although the storyline sounds good, the film itself becomes totally wierd after the first 20 or so minutes, and basically after an hour and a half I wondered why I bothered to watch it, the whole thing made no sense and a total waste of my time..............stay away from it if you were expecting some sort of warrior gore fest like gladiator etc, this film delivers no excitement, no decent storyline and no sense, just total rubbish.

Mads Mikkelson is the one eyed, mute warrior of exceptional prowess, who joins a band of Christian crusaders on their way to the Holy Land. On the journey, their boat becomes engulfed in fog, only for the party to emerge in a strange, foreign land. In many ways, that particular journey mirrors how this film played out for me. Before I go any further, let us be under no illusion. If you are expecting a film in the manner of '300', please walk on by. 'Valhalla Rising' is, at times, a stylish and visceral depiction of savage violence, though it is by no means an action film. What it is in actual fact is difficult to pin down. This is very much a film that invites the viewer to think about the concepts and ideas it presents. While I enjoy those films as much as the next person, this film fails in presenting a coherent idea. I struggled to see what the point of the film was. There is an argument to be had about how much hand holding a film needs to give, and I certainly do not expect to be spoon fed ideas on a plate. That notwithstanding, there comes a point where the filmmakers offer so little by way of plot or dialogue, you start to feel cheated. A feeling that the filmmakers could not be bothered to settle on a vision, and instead made something so formless and open that the viewer is forced to fill in large chunks of the work. There is nothing wrong in giving credit to your audience's intelligence. The idea that film can be a receptacle for the viewer's response and interpretation is nice, but on occasions like this, I feel we are left with an empty shell of a film.

A wonderful slow burn of a film. More arthouse musing on faith and existentialism than it is action film. A study in dark introspection, human nature, pain and loss. This has a lot in common with Akira Kurosawa's or Sergio Leone's films. The poster does this film a disservice by making it look like an violent action movie. This is probably why people reviewed it badly, because they were expecting something else.

It was my love of 'Drive' that drew me to one of the director's earlier movies but I just didn't quite get where this was going. It feels long (for a short film), pretentious and the only thing here that keeps your attention is the beautiful landscape in which it was filmed. It's the kind of film I'd expect to be showing in an art installation, a first feature made by some post grads. It's very deep and meaningful but it does not make captivating viewing.

Thought I'd give this a try as I loved 'Drive'. Truth is, got so bored that I had to switch off about 45 minutes through. Not a good film and only for specific tastes. Don't know how the director did 'Drive' so well and got this one so badly wrong. Maybe the subject matter doesn't suit NWR.

Don't rent this title unless you want to experience the filmic equivalent of a frontal lobotomy! I do not understand why this director receives so much attention and accolades. Nicolas Winding Refn has only made three good films, his first three 'The Pusher Trilogy'. 'Driver' is ok but like this lazy, self-indulgent piece of non-cinema it is so self-conscious as to make one feel nauseous. All we want is a good story, well told. Valhalla Rising is neither. Apparently however NWR did direct a rather good episode of 'Miss Marple' once.... REALLY, he did!
