    Excellent in every respect

Its far better than the Glenn Close/Uma Thurman /MichellePfieffer one. Can't say why this version was not as popular as the other one. It is all there: black humour, cracking performances, great plot and script, but there is a great humanity in all character absent from the top heavy cartoon-y (and frankly hammy) John Malkchovich version.

If you haven't seen the other, or even if you have, rent this, and give it your full attention. It has alot to say on all sorts of things but draws no conclusions for you.

    Valmont

Dangerous Liaisons has long been a firm favourite so I was keen to compare it to Valmont especially with Colin Firth in the lead - however whilst Valmomnt was lighter and less dramatic it was fun and enjoyable. However, the illicit tension was missing and the story line was dramatically different so there's no comparison really!

I was disappointed to see that this film only carried an average rating. I throught it 'very good' ,,, but I might be biased as period drama ia a favourite of mine. Annette Bening is the central character and steals the show. She carries off her part of extremely well as the scheming widow. The part of Valmont is played by Colin Firth who supports Bening beautifully. The film works well and if you like a period drama romp such as Moll Flanders, this is for you.

    Class!

If you hate this, go back to watching Kitsch American drivel with no imagination! If you're a fan of Colin Firth, you'll love this! (another wet shirt moment) and if you love Annette Benning, you'll love this!

It's better than 'Dangerous Liasons' and Firth is far more plausible as a master of seduction than Malkovich.

It doesn't stick 'strictly' to the book, but it's subtle and works.

    Genius!

    Better than dangerous liasons

I liked dangerous liasons even though i thought the plot was not that good but this movie is much better as more believable.

    Valmont

This version is quite different to the American film starring John Malcovich and Glenn Close, which unfortunately was made at the same time, which resulted in the European production not getting the attention is deserved.

All the characters are excellently cast, and the young Colin Firth makes it more possible to believe that women are easily seduced by Valmont! Wonderful art direction, and fantastic music played by the Academy of St. Martins-in-the-Field. A very overlooked film.

    Valmont

I loved this film, far superior to Dangerous Liaisons which I couldn't even finish, Colin Firth and Annette Bening are perfectly cast for the roles, the film catches the humour and satire of the original novel perfectly and Colin Firth is at his gorgeous best as Valmont probably his best role ever
