[Highly rated reviewer]This is very, very silly - Monty Python's blending of so many cultures, traditions and in-jokes (from Bob the Builder to Kabuki) that horror is pushed onto a back-burner, I suspect that a young, Japanese viewer would find far more allusions to contemporary youth culture than I did, but I found plenty to keep myself amused. The sfx were often a self-parody, which I particularly liked, as also references to Japanese classic films and prints. Fortunately, however, this is fun even if you don't recognise any of these things, with the bonus of terrific colour, flashes of keen satire and carefully-chosen music. Worth a second look to pick up on what you missed the first time round.

It's a totally bonkers film - brilliant!!!By a customer , 17 May 2013Ignore the low ratings. It is such a shame that it has been reviewed by people how don't understand the humour behind the film. It is not supposed to be serious or a comedy with generic jokes. It is supposed to be funny, wacked out, crazy, totally out there film and the sfx effects are supposed to be just as crazy as the film!

Put the DVD DownBy newvogueravyn (4 reviews) from Par , 23 Apr 2013Normally I don't review films because what makes a film enjoyable is subjective, but I was pretty disappointed with this. I knew vaguely what to expect since I've seen and loved many a Japanese horror film gore-splosion but no. If I cut all of the offensive stereotypes out of the film, I could probably make a passably good quirky gore flick as Tokyo Gore Police was, since there were parts that I really enjoyed and made me laugh with the sheer glorious ridiculousness. As it is, some points were so painful I couldnt bear it, which is kind of a shame given the minor roles and cameos from Eihi Shiina, Takashi Shimizu (who starts rambling about Ju On when hes meant to be teaching a Chinese class) and Kanji Tsuda - a. k. a Katsuya Tokunaga from Ju-On. I was able to ignore all the issues around the presentation of self-harmers in Tokyo Gore Police, partly because it made a kind of sense in context (it was a crapsack AU Tokyo, Rika clearly had psychological trauma), but this film plays it for comedy, and it's just not funny. As for needing a bit of knowledge about the culture to 'get' the supposed Ganguro club scenes, pardon me if I don't find mocking a youth subculture created as a reaction against traditional cultural notions of feminine beauty using gross racial stereotypes amusing.
Strangely laughableBy a customer , 23 Feb 2013Was so bad, it was great fun. Didn't make any sense at all, but couldn't stop laughing all the way through.
